These rifles are used by hunters, competitors, a lot of Americans seeking home-defense guns and by many others who simply enjoy going to the range.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though modern sporting rifles are increasingly popular, they are too often misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>The central reason these firearms are misunderstood is political. Though the semiautomatic design used in today\u2019s pistols, rifles and shotguns was invented in the late-nineteenth century and was popularly sold to consumers in America and Europe in the early twentieth century, the modern sporting rifle has been called a \u201cweapon of war\u201d by those who want to ban them.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13812\" src=\"https:\/\/openseasonoutlet.com\/unicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/themossportrife_Img1_2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openseasonoutlet.com\/unicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/themossportrife_Img1_2022.jpg 421w, https:\/\/openseasonoutlet.com\/unicdn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/themossportrife_Img1_2022-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/>Though some modern sporting rifles might cosmetically look like fully automatic rifles the military uses, modern sporting rifles by law have many internal differences.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To dispel the myths about modern sporting rifles so that we can have honest and factual discussions about them here are the facts about these rifles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Modern Sporting Rifle Facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li>Modern sporting rifles are among the most popular firearms being sold today.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cAR\u201d in \u201cAR-15\u201d rifle stands for\u00a0<strong>ArmaLite rifle<\/strong>, after the company that developed it in the 1950s.\u00a0<strong>\u201cAR\u201d does NOT stand for \u201cassault rifle\u201d or \u201cautomatic rifle.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>AR-15-style rifles are\u00a0<strong>NOT \u201cassault weapons\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0or \u201cassault rifles.\u201d An assault rifle is fully automatic, a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>If someone calls an AR-15-style rifle an \u201cassault weapon,\u201d then they\u2019ve been duped by an agenda. The only real way to define what is an \u201cassault weapon\u201d is politically, as in how any given law chooses to define the term\u2014this is why the states that have banned this category of semiautomatic firearms have done so with very different definitions.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>AR-15-style rifles can look like military rifles, such as the M-16, but by law they function like other semiautomatic civilian sporting firearms, as they fire only\u00a0<strong>one round<\/strong>\u00a0with each pull of the trigger.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>Versions of modern sporting rifles are legal to own in most states, provided the purchaser passes the mandatory FBI background check required for all retail firearm purchasers.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>Since America\u2019s founding, civilian sporting rifles have evolved along with military firearms. The modern sporting rifle simply follows that pattern.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>These rifles\u2019 accuracy, reliability, ruggedness and versatility serve\u00a0<strong>target shooters and hunters<\/strong>\u00a0well. They are true all-weather firearms.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>Modern sporting rifles are chambered in .22 LR, .223 (5.56 x 45mm), 6.8 SPC, .308, .450 Bushmaster and in many other calibers. Upper receivers for pistol calibers such as 9 mm, .40, and .45 are available. There are even .410 shotgun versions.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>These rifles are used for many\u00a0<strong>different types of hunting<\/strong>, from varmint to big game. And they\u2019re used for\u00a0<strong>target shooting and in competitions<\/strong>.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>AR-15-style rifles are no more powerful than other hunting rifles of the same caliber and in most cases are chambered in calibers\u00a0<strong>less powerful<\/strong>\u00a0than common big-game hunting cartridges like the .30-06 Springfield and .300 Win. Mag.<br \/>\u200d<\/li>\n<li>The AR-15 platform is modular.
